In The Hierophant card of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, a scene unfolds where the majesty of arcane knowledge is enshrined upon a throne. The Hierophant is depicted as a pontiff seated solemnly upon a raised throne between two gray columns. His ceremonial vestments are rich and sumptuous, in a cardinal red denoting power and spiritual vitality, with three white bands on his stole symbolizing the three levels of doctrine. Upon his head, he wears a golden triple crown, representing his sovereignty over the realms of mind, spirit, and matter. His right hand is raised in a gesture of esoteric blessing, while his left hand holds a golden scepter in the form of a triple cross. At his feet rest two crossed keys, one of gold and one of silver, representing the reconciliation of opposites and the unlocking of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.
