The Natal Arcana: Astrology vs. Numerology
Learn how to find your Tarot birth card through the two great traditions: the Golden Dawn astrological method and psychological numerology.

What is Your Tarot Birth Card? The Truth About Natal Arcana (Astrology vs. Numerology)
If you have been exploring Tarot for any amount of time, you have surely encountered the famous question: "What is my birth card or my natal arcana?"
And this is where almost everyone gets confused. You search online and one website tells you that your card depends strictly on your zodiac sign, while another asks you to add up all the numbers in your birth date until reducing them to a single figure. You end up with two completely different cards and no idea which one to believe.
The reality is fascinating: there is no single way to calculate it because they originate from two completely different esoteric traditions. Neither is "fake", but each examines your psyche from a distinct vantage point.
Today I want to explain how each one works so you can discover your two cards and understand what they truly represent.
1. The Astrological Path: The Golden Dawn Tradition (By Your Sun Sign)
This is the classical school of Hermetic Tarot. In the late 19th century, the legendary esoteric order Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (which included Arthur Edward Waite, creator of the Rider-Waite deck, and illustrator Pamela Colman Smith) sought to organize tarot's symbolic universe.
Drawing upon ancient kabbalistic texts like the Sefer Yetzirah, they mathematically mapped the 22 Major Arcana to cosmic forces: the 4 elements, the 7 classical planets, and the 12 zodiac signs.
Under this tradition, your natal arcana is determined by your sun sign (or your rising sign). It represents the archetypal temperament with which you navigate the world:
- ✦♈ Aries: IV — The Emperor (Structure, leadership, willpower, and drive)
- ✦♉ Taurus: V — The Hierophant (Tradition, solid values, patience)
- ✦♊ Gemini: VI — The Lovers (Choice, duality, intellect, and relationships)
- ✦♋ Cancer: VII — The Chariot (Emotional self-mastery, direction, and protection)
- ✦♌ Leo: VIII — Strength (Taming of ego, channeled passion, courage)
- ✦♍ Virgo: IX — The Hermit (Inner quest, discernment, and one's own light)
- ✦♎ Libra: XI — Justice (Karmic balance, truth, and cause-and-effect)
- ✦♏ Scorpio: XIII — Death (Radical transformation, rebirth, letting go)
- ✦♐ Sagittarius: XIV — Temperance (Inner alchemy, purpose, and synthesis)
- ✦♑ Capricorn: XV — The Devil (Facing the shadow, material binds, and attachments)
- ✦♒ Aquarius: XVII — The Star (Vision of the future, authenticity, and inspiration)
- ✦♓ Pisces: XVIII — The Moon (The subconscious, intuition, and the dream realm)
What does this tell you? It speaks of your baseline operating system. It is the elemental energy activated whenever you face major life choices.
2. The Numerological Path: The Life Path (By Your Full Birth Date)
This second path is not astrology, but Pythagorean numerology applied to Tarot archetypes.
It was formally documented and popularized in the 1980s and 1990s by tarot masters such as Mary K. Greer (Who Are You in the Tarot?) and anthropologist Angeles Arrien, as well as the French Birth Referencing system created by Georges Colleuil.
Rather than looking to the stars, this technique tallies the vibration of every digit in your full birth date to reveal your Life Card.
How is it calculated?
Add up every digit of your full date of birth (Day + Month + Year). If the sum exceeds 22 (the number of Major Arcana), reduce it by adding its digits until you get a number between 1 and 22.
Real Example:Someone born on August 15, 1990 (15/08/1990):
- 1Sum:
1 + 5 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 33 - 2Since 33 exceeds 22, add the digits:
3 + 3 = 6 - 3Life Card: Arcanum VI — The Lovers.
(If your sum lands directly on a number between 1 and 22, that is your direct card. For example, 14 equals Temperance).
What does this tell you? It does not describe your outer personality, but rather the major evolutionary lesson your soul came to integrate. It is the underlying archetype that resurfaces during your greatest life crossroads.
Which of the two should you use?
The beauty of this framework is that they don't compete; they complement each other:
- ✦Your Astrological Arcana (Golden Dawn) is your vehicle: how you think, react, and carry your everyday energy.
- ✦Your Numerological Arcana (Greer / Arrien) is your destination: where life pushes you toward maturity and which archetype you are here to master.
In my personal case: my natal arcana is Gemini = The Lovers. A card that is not merely about romantic flings, but the eternal dilemma between answering the call of the heart or seeking refuge in safe comfort; the art of conscious choice.
